Rôle: assistant de production assistant mise en scène
Presentation
The play that we propose to perform is "Shakers" by John Godber - it's a bittersweet comedy with four female parts which include lager swilling men, checkout girls, prostitutes and cocktail waitresses to name but a few. So far we have cast three of the roles, played by Louise, Sophie and Fiona respectively and require one more female actress to be involved.
Jenny Baldwin is going to be our producer and will be assisted by Nicolas. Our plan is to perform approximately eight shows in the local area and perhaps branch out into Winchester and Guildford pending venues. We are informed too, I've received advice from two professional touring companies who said we can meet with a representative of theirs to help us out with any questions. We are arranging tour feasonability meeting with Mark and Charlotte from the NTR to get more information regarding the process as well as this we have been talking to Helen Hodge from Fecund as well about the art of negotiating with the theatres.
We already have interest from about six or seven venues, they are replying daily which is encouraging as well as this we will be contacting schools about the performances, sending literature about the production so they know in enough time about the show. But if you want to be involved in the show please let us know as soon as you can, of around the thirty plus venues I have contacted at least half are fully booked for April already so if you want to be part of the tour then get on board right away. We know for a fact that the play is on GCSE, AS and A level syllabuses so we expect to gain a significant percentage of our audience from the student populace, as well as this - simply put it's a popular play by a popular playwright.
As aforementioned the principal role we need to fill is another actress but there is certainly non-acting roles available in promotion and technical assistance. Logistically the play is not too difficult to stage as there is no strict set as such and we are currently on the lookout for props. Also this means that performing in intimate spaces or large theatres would be easily achievable and means we are not necessarily limited by our choice of venue - so the props etc will be procured in such a way that makes the setting look impressive yet will be easy to transport. Also everyone is taking on something else within the company - it's mentioned in the mission statement that although this is the case everyone will have to focus their attention largely on the bigger task in hand - i.e - acting but everyone's input is welcomed from the start and at all times along the way.
Misc Info We have already been in contact with the publishers and they are in the process of deciding a quote for the rights to the play. Our plan is to debut the play at the third floor arts centre in the first week in April - the venue is available and we are currently in negotiations with them regarding the show. If you want to see a list of some of the venues contacted then let us know and we can provide that information.
MISSION STATEMENT
As a part of this new company, here is an outline of all of the goals that we should plan to achieve:
Create a dynamic and entertaining theatre company that works in a variety of spaces.
Perform a production that guarantees artistic fulfilment for the performers within the company as well as staging productions that are well attended by the audience we are trying to target.
We will take the production on tour in the local area The aim is to perform the show in a variety of venues in order to attract attention - from the media local or otherwise. For example - Holding a preview night in a local venue - to invite sponsors/friends of family/people from the industry... creating a buzz already before the run has already began to run or even take shape. I propose to hold the first review night in the Wiltshire building in April if this is at all possible. Though I think research might have be undertaken as to whether or not this would affect our overall revenue.
To take the production on tour in the (relatively) local area There are many schools, colleges, universities and arts centres in the locality and after contacting some arts centres initially the sooner we book then the sooner we can be a part of brochures and literature. Also some arts centres are not booking past May so if we want to tour several venues then we need to be cast right away. The overall aim of this element of the mission statement is to be able to tailor the plays' set, props and performances to work in a variety of different venues. "Shakers" is a played studied at GCSE and A level and in the recent years has enjoyed successful spells in the West End and at the Edinburgh fringe festival. At time of writing there are no plans for any productions of "Shakers" to be performed nationally so obtaining the rights should not be a problem and plans are already afoot to gauge exactly how much this will initially cost. Also different performances in different types of spaces and venues give us a lot more scope to attract attention from the media, local or otherwise
A name for the company? Naked.Free.Sex is a company name that is made up of the three most searched for words on the internet. The production will be targeted at students and adults alike, however we should be realistic in trying to target the major theatre going demographic which is 19-40. On the other hand, a controversial name might attract an audience that fall outside this demographic and therefore bolstering ticket sales and audiences. Obviously at this early stage - an at all times, the theatre company is a democracy but in terms of direction there needs to be a hierarchy. Everyone who wants to be involved with acting must pay the "lion's share" of attention on that task, but input on every creative aspect is welcomed from everyone involved. But obviously the name is up for discussion and no firm decision has been made regarding it yet.
Creative fulfilment overall As the director of the production proposed and for any future productions - devotion and enthusiasm to the task in hand is paramount. My personal belief is that plays can be rehearsed and produced without the need for creating a tense atmosphere or shouting and screaming at each other. If you are willing to put in 100% effort then you will have a fantastic, enjoyable, worthy and ultimately fulfilling experience.
