Since 2011, Michael Mundaca has co-directed the National Tax Department and Americas Tax Center with Ernst & Young. In this role, he oversees more than 2,500 tax professionals who perform tax consulting and planning services for clients in the US and abroad. Michael Mundaca had previously worked with Ernst & Young from 2002-2007 as a principal in its National Tax Department's International Tax Services group.

In addition to his private sector experience, Michael Mundaca has filled multiple roles with the U.S. Treasury Department. From 1997-2002, he worked under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush in the department’s Office of Tax Policy. During this period, he held such titles as associate international tax counsel, senior advisor on electronic commerce, and deputy international tax counsel.

Following his initial time with Ernst & Young, Michael Mundaca returned to the Treasury Department in 2007 as the deputy assistant secretary for international tax affairs. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him to the post of assistant treasury secretary for tax policy. In this role, he advised Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on all issues relating to taxation. For his efforts, the Treasury Department honored him with its most prestigious distinction, the Alexander Hamilton Award, in 2011.
