Based in New York City, Larry Finer is a data scientist who recently completed a 12-week bootcamp at Metis. There, he honed his skills in programming, data acquisition and cleaning, and machine learning. He completed three projects during this time, such as using natural language processing to understand how slang is used on Urban Dictionary, and earned a certificate in data science. Larry Finer also has a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Harvard University, where he graduated cum laude, and a doctor of philosophy degree in population dynamics from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His dissertation focused on the consistency and determinants of reproductive health policy in the American states.
Prior to his concentration on data science, Larry Finer spent 20 years with the Guttmacher Institute, where he began as a senior research associate. He later became the vice president for domestic research and oversaw the organization’s U.S. research portfolio. At this time, he also served as a senior lecturer with the Helibrunn Department of Population and Family Health at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
