An experienced journalist, Jonathan Kaiman serves as Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times. In this position, he leads a team that includes both local staff and a freelance network spread across Asia. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Jonathan Kaiman has received reporting grants from the Foreign Press Center of Japan and the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting.

Jon Kaiman earned a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College, where he studied cognitive science and Chinese. As an undergraduate, he received a Freeman Asia grant which allowed him to study Chinese at Qingdao University. He later returned to China to participate in a language immersion course in Beijing.

Prior to being named Beijing bureau chief for the LA Times, Jon Kaiman served as the paper’s youngest staff foreign correspondent, charged with covering a dozen Asian countries from Mongolia to Indonesia. He joined the LA Times after spending three years as a China correspondent for The Guardian, during which time he wrote more than 400 feature articles on topics ranging from Christian missionaries in Tibet to Hong Kong's "Umbrella Movement."
