A prominent futurist and former librarian, San Francisco resident Joe (Joseph) Murphy drew upon more than a decade of experience in his most recent position as the director of library futures for the Bay Area company, Innovative Interfaces. In this role, he worked with thought leadership and product design and management teams to develop initiatives that expanded the company’s reach. Joseph “Joe” Murphy also forged partnerships with organizations and events, such as at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas.

Prior to his work with Innovative Interfaces, Joe Murphy served as a keynote speaker and consultant for Library Future in Los Angeles, California, and as a science librarian and coordinator of instruction and technology with Yale University. In his work at Yale, he managed operations and supervised a budget of more than $2.5 million in the science libraries.

In addition to his professional experience, Joe Murphy holds a number of relevant degrees and certificates. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Syracuse University before going on to complete a master’s degree in library and information science at the University of Hawaii. Mr. Murphy also recently completed an MBA at San Francisco State University and is nearing completion of a master’s degree in foresight (futures studies) at the University of Houston. Joe Murphy also holds a certificate in Human Centered Design 9design thinking and design research) and a certificate in strategic foresight.

The Master of Science in Foresight degree is the graduate degree for professional Futurists. Strategic Foresight prepared me as an expert to research and plan for the futures of our organizations. To engage purposeful methods for evaluating plausible future directions. I evaluate elements of our standard understood future, anticipate significant changes that lie ahead, and calculate likely possible futures. I identify and guide issues involved in our preferable futures and strategically apply pressure to influence towards hoped for outcomes as we achieve long-term goals. Researching futures, project management of future-oriented programs, communicating implications and drivers of change.

The executive MBA gave me the education and training of general management and high level leadership. in the cohort-based style of the Executive program I learned alongside bright and diverse managers from around the Bay Area. This MBA program taught us everything from operations planning to forecasting and leadership, strategy and design thinking, innovation and marketing, sustainability and finance, accounting and service planning, IT management and economics. With this MBA I can ensure that creative projects have the how and what to succeed and that future-facing initiatives serve future stakeholders.

It set a research-based foundation for my career as a futurist, strategist, and manager. Library and Information Science gave me fluency in research and the entire information ecosystem. it made me an expert in the synthesis of information, the asking and refinement of questions, scholarly communication, and research expertise as well as in the creation, organization, access, and applications of data and its translation into knowledge. I learned project management of information services and systems. This Graduate degree prepared me as a Librarian running several of Yale's Science libraries serving the research and teaching needs of faculty and graduate students in the physical sciences.

Dean's List. Studied abroad in London which gave me a worldly sense of global interconnectedness and a lifelong passion for engaging internationally. Studying physics gave me processes for complex STEM-type problem solving (theoretical, computational approaches, and hands on laboratory experience) to solve novel and difficult problems. I also studied Women's Studies and native American Studies in this Liberal arts college.
