Certified Public Accountant Brenda Roberts has a track record of success, bringing the value of audit, compliance, risk management and forensic analysis to strengthen financial and operational controls and improve operating efficiencies. In 2014, she was elected Oakland City Auditor. As City Auditor, she reported to the residents of Oakland. During her four-year term, she issued 22 audit reports, focusing on housing, police overtime, jobs and employment programs funded through federal and state initiatives, urban wildfire preparedness, and funding for Oakland children's services. All of these reports included recommendations to the City Administrator--recommendations developed to bring about improved operations and assurances of compliance with polices and regulations. She managed the City's Whistleblower program and conducted internal investigations, holding wrong-doers accountable, and identifying areas with weak controls or poor work practices. She prepared financial analyses on 12 ballot measures--independent analyses residents relied upon when they voted for new taxes and changes.in the law.
Before she was Oakland’s city auditor, Brenda Roberts worked for AAA of Northern California, Nevada, and Utah as the Director of Internal Audit. In this position, she built the internal audit department from the ground up, designing its procedures, envisioning its long-term audit plan, and recruiting staff members.
Brenda Roberts holds an MBA in Finance from Golden Gate University. She is an adjunct professor at San Francisco State University, teaching auditing courses and mentoring students as they embark on their careers in accounting and business.
