Under close supervision, to instruct students about experiments, systems and/or methods and protocols (normally in a laboratory context but also in other contexts such as example classes, computer laboratories or field settings) and provide support to students engaged in such practical work.

  • Reinforce lessons presented by teachers by reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups
  • Enforce school and class rules to help teach students proper behavior
  • Help teachers with recordkeeping, such as tracking attendance and calculating grades
  • Help teachers prepare for lessons by getting materials ready or setting up equipment, such as computers
  • Help supervise students in class, between classes, during lunch and recess, and on field trips
  • deliver tailored teaching activities to pupils on either a one-to-one basis or in small groups
  • make sure that the pupils you support are able to engage in learning and stay on task during the lesson or activity
  • support the social and emotional development of pupils, reporting any issues when required
  • support the teacher in managing challenging pupil behaviour and promoting positive behaviour

  • provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils' progress
  • carry out administrative duties, such as preparing classroom resources

  • provide support outside of your normal classes, such as helping during exams, covering TA absences or going on school trips
  • help with extracurricular activity such as breakfast and after-school clubs, homework club, revision sessions or lunchtime duties
  • supervise other support staff
  • coordinate specific areas of teaching support once you have the right level of experience.
  • To demonstrate use of conduct experiments, exercises, workshops and/or processes and to answer questions related to those demonstrations.
  • To assist/give guidance, where required, to students who are carrying out practical exercises and sheets,....etc.

  • To be aware of any health and safety implications of procedures, and take action to maintain a safe environment, raising any concerns with the course organizer/work supervisor.
  • Where required, provide feedback on student performance and any issues arising in the course of the demonstration, to the course organizer/work supervisor.
  • Where required, to assist in marking student tests set by the course organizer using defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.
  • Where required, to ensure that equipment is functional and/or material for demonstrations, exercises etc is prepared before the start of the session.
  • Maintain student attendance records.
  • To agree with the relevant lecturer what practical work is to be done and how the class should be conducted.
  • To prepare for the class by familiarising themselves with any protocols or other information required, and ensuring that they have undertaken the relevant exercises and experiments themselves beforehand.
  • If required to conduct any demonstrations, to do so in such a way as to convey relevant information and outcomes clearly and accurately to students.
  • To provide pro-active support to students engaged in practical work, to answer their questions where possible and to help them overcome any problems encountered.
  • To provide laboratory or other relevant skills coaching and/or instruction as required.
  • May be required to set up and prepare, as necessary, the relevant equipment, hardware, consumables, software etc. in advance of the class.
  • To undertake relevant administration associated with their practical support activity.
  • Where required, to undertake related practical assessment (normally in class and subject to moderation by the responsible member of academic staff).
  • To feedback to the relevant lecturer and technical staff any problems encountered in class.
  • To maintain academic standards and work in accordance with university policies (eg regarding health and safety, and equal opportunities).
