Working his way up through the ranks of collegiate coaching, Alex Groothuis, a Syracuse University graduate, began his career as Assistant Basketball Coach at Division III Brooklyn College. Assistant Coach Alex Groothuis’ duties included running practices and helping to create new game plans. Alex Groothuis’ dedication to the game and skills as a play strategist helped the team win 16 games in 1999, advancing the Brooklyn College Bridges to the final four of the CUNY Athletic Conference.
Today, Head Basketball Coach Alex Groothuis manages the men’s basketball program at Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Florida, handling everything from practice coordination to exercise regimes and departmental budgeting.
Having spent the last 15 years developing a successful coaching routine, Head Coach Alex Groothuis adds to it with each role that he has held and every basketball camp where he has taught.
Between 1995 and 2004, Coach Alex Groothuis instructed fundamental and advanced playing skills at summer camps for collegiate players from Fordham University, Hofstra University, and Syracuse University. Alex Groothuis helped the athletes develop their abilities in shooting, dribbling, and rebounding, and coached many of them in play tactics that included defensive rotations, point guard plays, and primary and secondary fast breaks.
Under Head Coach Dereck Whittenburg, Alex Groothuis assistant coached the Division 1 Wagner College men’s basketball team to two of the school’s most successful seasons. In 2003, Alex Groothuis was instrumental in the Seahawks’ ranking first in the Northeast Conference and proceeding to Wagner’s first ever bid in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.
From 2004 to 2006, Alex Groothuis held two positions with the Fordham University men’s basketball team: Director of Basketball Operations and Assistant Coach.
Alex Groothuis has a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Physical Education. Head Coach Alex Groothuis’ Panthers team plays in the Southern Conference of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Division 1.
